Valle d'Aosta is full of mines, exploited since ancient times and currently abandoned. In the 17th and 18th centuries, the iron and copper mines were used to meet the growing demands of the Savoyard arsenal.
The ancient mines are often located in very scenic places and sometimes preserve the remains of the infrastructures used for the mining activity: they are destinations that manage to combine the interest in industrial archeology with the opportunity for splendid excursions.
The mines of Cogne are an interesting testimony of mining exploitation: the remains of the cableways for the transport of the material are clearly visible, the cableway for passengers that reached from Cogne to Colonna, and numerous buildings.
Also in Cogne, the ancient silver mine of Valeille, the copper mine of Ecloseur and the magnetite mine of Larsinaz should be mentioned.
Do not miss a visit to the visitor center of the Gran Paradiso National Park Alpinart to its permanent exhibition on the Cogne magnetite mine, with illustrations of the history, geology, mining complex and production activity.
